This service comprises an initial assessment followed by treatment sessions. The first consultation usually lasts up to 1 hour and is fundamental to the process of understanding a patient’s problems. It is the opportunity for the patient to give a detailed description of their injury history and other relevant medical issues. This subjective (based on personal emotions and opinions) part of the assessment is crucial in understanding possible mechanisms of injury or the reasons for ongoing pain. It also directs further focus when undertaking the objective (non-personal and factual ie. physical) part of the assessment.
This is when we look at how your body moves (as this is individual to you) as well as assessing specific joints, muscles and other soft tissues. A patient’s sports participation, activities and work environments influence the type of functional rehabilitation we would prescribe. This may involve a variety of ‘hands-on’ manual therapy techniques as well as specific exercises to regain normal pain-free movement. Management strategies and advice in understanding the possible causes are given in order to optimise recovery, minimise fear and further reoccurrence.
Follow on sessions are usually 30 minutes long and continue the treatment/rehabilitation and management plan until the patient’s goals are met.
